The Keys to finding employment

The Keys to a Job

The keys to finding employment

The following appeared in the Herald Sun on July 19th, 1997. It was supplied by the New South Wales Chamber of Commerce. You will notice that academics are not mentioned.

What Employers Require

  • Willingness to work. Most employers are not impressed with the argument that someone on the dole is waiting for the right job. They prefer someone who has had previous work experience even if it is not in their chosen career.
  • Honesty
  • Reliability
  • Willingness to learn
  • Good presentation, responsibility and punctuality.
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willingness to start at the bottom and work their way up. (This requires beginning work before the child is eighteen as most employers are not prepared to pay adult wages for no experience.)

Job Hints

  • Keep your mind open about job opportunities. Often your skills and interests can be used in a wide variety of jobs. For example if you enjoy or are good at physics the following are a few of the possibilities.´┐Żboiler attendant, building technician, laboratory assistant, electronics engineering technician, industrial engineer, geologist. Each requires a different level of education.
  • Organise a well presented, typed resume that contains information on your work history, education and achievements.
  • Ensure you are well presented
  • At the interview keep your jacket on. Be positive. Use words like "however" to turn a negative into a strong positive.
  • Show you are interested by telling the interviewer at the end of the interview that you want the job.
  • Follow up the interview with a phone call to the interviewer after a reasonable time if you have not heard.
